Texaco Delo low viscosity heavy duty engine oils are designed to offer fuel economy benefits, after-treatment system compatibility and competitive drain periods, while also meeting the protection and performance levels required to comply with the latest ACEA and major OEM specifications and approvals.

Why shift to low viscosity oils?

Many OEMs are now supporting the use of 30 weight oils (5W-30 or 10W-30) as they look to achieve optimum fuel economy from their vehicles and respond to the increasing appetite from customers to reduce their carbon emissions while also saving money. Emissions guidelines necessitated an evolution in engine design with after-treatment systems essential for compliant operation. This had to be balanced by the need for fleets to lower their operating costs without compromising the durability of their vehicles. This complex list of requirements has put a greater demand than ever on lubricants, resulting in the development of thinner oils that still have to deliver performance while maintaining drain periods by continuing to be able to provide thermal stability, wear protection, soot control and oxidation resistance.

What benefits do 30 weight oils provide?

Fuel economy

Low viscosity oils show an improvement in fuel economy when compared with thicker oils, thereby reducing CO2 emissions. However, volatility and thickening resistance remain within ACEA limits; ensuring performance is maintained throughout the oil drain period.

Wear protection

While low viscosity oils are thinner than 10W-40 grades, they show comparable wear protection to 10W-40 products, well inside recommended limits.

Cold weather performance

Bench testing is used to measure flow and give an indication of performance in cold climates. At temperatures of -35C low viscosity oils can provide significantly better flow than 15W-40 oils.  At extremely low temperatures of -45C, 5W-30 oils have been shown to produce close to 0W grade performance. This gives a high level of confidence that engine protection can be delivered even in the harshest of winter conditions.
