About Sharon

Sharon van Rouwendaal is a multi-award-winning champion open water swimmer, and the first woman to win two open water medals at the Olympics, following her gold and silver medal success in the 10km Open Water Marathon at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and 2020 Tokyo games respectively.

Her junior career began at the 2008 European Junior Championships in Belgrade at which she won four medals, including a gold medal in the 1500 metre freestyle.  Sharon then went on to compete at senior level and made her international breakthrough by winning silver medals in both the 100m and 200m backstroke at the 2010 European Short Course Championships in Eindhoven.  Then followed a succession of international events, including her first World Championship long course medal in 200m backstroke at Shanghai in 2011, the 2012 Olympics and the 2014 European Championships, before securing her first Olympic medal in 2016. 

A very versatile swimmer with numerous medals in both open water and pool events, Sharon’s first love is distance freestyle events. In addition to her Olympic success, Sharon has secured seven gold European Championship medals, eight World Championship medals and has previously been named Female Open Water Swimmer of the Year by SwimSwam Magazine.
