Texaco PitPack:

In the constantly evolving automotive maintenance sector, workshops face multiple challenges. From increasing technical specifications required by car manufacturers, to the need to optimise space and reduce waste at their sites. To support these industry needs, Texaco Lubricants, backed by Chevron’s global technology expertise, introduced the Texaco PitPack system to the market, which has already been adopted by over 1,000 Italian workshops.

Italy was selected as the pilot region for the European launch. We discussed Texaco PitPack with engineer, Michel Mosseri, Director of the Texaco Division at Lubex, the exclusive distributor of Texaco Havoline and Delo products for Italy, who is managing the project.

A Concept Born from a Real Need

"The PitPack project began in 2019 in response to an increasingly pressing need from workshops to manage a growing variety of engine oils in a more rational, practical, and sustainable way," explains Mosseri. "In the past, a single 208-litre drum was enough to cover the entire range of engines. Today, each manufacturer requires more targeted products, which means a rise in the number of drums and tanks, creating storage, logistics, and disposal issues."

The Texaco PitPack system stands out primarily for its innovative packaging. It consists of a recyclable carton containing an inner 20-litre polyethylene bag, which collapses upon itself as oil is dispensed, reducing bulk and simplifying disposal. The labels on the boxes match those already in use, making product identification simple and immediate.

"It’s a simple, but extremely effective idea. The bag compresses down on itself and takes up very little space once empty,” Mosseri emphasises. "The use of the bag leads to an overall weight reduction from 900 grams to just 134 grams per unit, with direct benefits in terms of cost and ease of use."

Thanks to the dispensing nozzle built into the new packaging, the mechanic can pour oil quickly and cleanly, minimising waste. This helps avoid spills on the floor and improves workplace tidiness. Texaco has worked to consider every detail, even ergonomic racks. PitPack containers fit into a modular display stand that can hold up to six boxes and include removable drip trays for easy cleaning. The system occupies much less space than six rigid 20-litre canisters.

Less plastic, more recyclable material

Energy-efficient production is another key aspect to the PitPack project, as Mosseri highlights:

"Energy savings have been made, thanks to the reduced use of plastic. The new liner bags within each carton contain 85 per cent less plastic* than the previous 20-litre plastic pails. Furthermore, as the cardboard packaging is fully recyclable and can be disposed of with paper waste, this reduces the amount of special waste to be cleared and consequently lowers disposal costs for workshops."

Already in 1,000 Workshops in Italy: The Numbers Behind the Success

To date, the PitPack system is in use by approximately 1,000 Italian workshops across the country, of which 700 to 800 belong to a major rental company’s network, and 300 are independent workshops.

"Feedback has been very positive. Mechanics appreciate the system’s cleanliness, ease of use, and above all the fact that they can finally manage a much larger range of viscosities and technical specifications as required by automotive manufacturers, using very little space," explains Mosseri. "Many of our customers have told us that it has radically changed the way they organise their storage and work areas."

The future goal is to further expand PitPack adoption, integrate new Texaco Havoline formulations into the available PitPack range, and continue to assess ways to help lower carbon usage.
