Texaco HDAX 6500 LFG has been a critical aspect of a project to remove waste from the Vinča landfill site in Belgrade, Serbia. The HDAX 6500 product has been used in CAT engines CG170-20 and 2x1,5 MW in collaboration with Serbian distributor partner, TRIGEMA, part of T-GROUP Holding, and one of its customers.

The largest unmanaged open dump remaining in Europe, the Vinča landfill takes in 1,500 tonnes of household waste and 3,000 tonnes of construction waste on a daily basis. Despite being equivalent in size to 185 association football pitches, the landfill is running out of space to accommodate the new waste that is delivered daily.

Local authorities began work with Suez-Itochu, a French and Japanese construction consortium, in 2019 to undertake the construction of a new landfill site, an incinerator, and a waste-to-energy plant. The rennovations will see the site become compliant with applicable European Union specifications and standards. As part of the project, the existing waste will become green space, while gases emanating from the waste will be collected to generate electricity. The new site will process incoming waste to generate heat and electricity, and workers on-site will collect and treat runoff water.

In collaboration with its customer, TRIGEMA has now implemented Texaco Lubricants’ HDAX 6500 LFG gas engine oil into two stationary gas engines that will be used as part of the project.

TRIGEMA’s working relationship with the customer began at the beginning of 2020, following initial discussions on Caterpillar’s engine options for biogas plants and the experience of both companies in working in these environments. The relationship grew in 2022 as negotiations commenced directly in relation to the Vinča landfill project. As part of a competitive consultation process, TRIGEMA was tasked with proving the quality, reliability, and effectiveness of its Texaco products.

TRIGEMA chose to showcase Texaco HDAX 6500 LFG to its customer, prompting positive feedback. The next step required Texaco’s Serbian distributor to demonstrate its reliability and prove that it could fulfil the commercial and security requirements for the project.

Providing examples of the previous projects that the business had worked on across Belgrade over the last 20 years, TRIGEMA was able to establish its expertise in managing oil change intervals, engine maintenance savings, and capacity to fulfil the life span of the engine. The team also presented their vision to overcome any logistical issues, including its plan to undertake risk assessments, provide a suitable truck to deliver the product, supply personal protective equipment, and offer training to its staff.

Bozo Rajic, Manager of Technical Support at T-GROUP Holding, was delighted with the support offered by Texaco Lubricants in helping to secure the company’s involvement in the Vinča landfill project. He said, “Having been a distributor of Texaco Lubricants products for over 20 years, we have no doubt of the quality of the industry-leading products in Texaco’s portfolio. The brand also offers an excellent level of technical support, the LubeWatch oil analysis programme, and wider education on many aspects of the lubricants sector. This support was key for the Vinča landfill project, and it was a significant factor in our selection for the first-fill.

“We are extremely pleased to work on a project that will not only have such a positive impact on Belgrade, but the future of Serbia as a whole as we help to take tangible steps towards greater sustainability.”
