Next up in this series of features exploring products within the Texaco range, we reflect on Texaco HDAX 9500 SAE 40, a premium performance extended drain gas engine oil that offers a long list of benefits to operators.

What is Texaco HDAX 9500 SAE 40?

Specifically, Texaco HDAX 9500 SAE 40 is a premium performance gas engine lubricant, a dispersant/detergent-type extended drain gas engine oil designed specifically for gas engines running on landfill gas, biogas and digester gas, and for sour gas applications. It is also suitable for use in some natural gas applications.

Engineered with advanced gas engine maintenance in mind, HDAX 9500 SAE 40 is formulated with premium base oils with very low levels of sulphur, nitrogen and aromatics. It contains ashless dispersants, oxidation inhibitors, metallic detergents, and anti-wear agents designed to prevent oxidation, corrosion, deposits, wear, and scuffing.

What are the key benefits of Texaco HDAX 9500 SAE 40?

One key benefit for operators is the oil’s oxidation/nitration resistance with base number retention, which helps to provide extended drain while being compatible with very low oil feed rate engines. The product also offers piston deposit control, helping to provide cylinder liner scuff and abrasive wear protection, and a longer engine service life.

Another feature to note is the oil’s dispersant/detergent system with oxidation/nitration resistance, which helps to minimise oil thickening, sludge formation, and filter plugging. Additionally, the product’s low phosphorus additive formulation allows it to be used with catalyst systems.

Applications for Texaco HDAX 9500 SAE 40 gas engine oil

Texaco HDAX 9500 SAE 40 is designed to meet for use in four-stroke engines running on:

  • Landfill gas (including gas with high chlorofluorocarbons or siloxane content).
  • Biogas.
  • Digester gas.
  • Sour gas applications.
  • Select natural gas applications.

Have any manufacturers approved of its use?

Texaco HDAX 9500 SAE 40 has been rigorously tested and approved by leading gas engine manufacturers, including:

  • Jenbacher TA 1000-1109: Approved for Fuel Class B (biogas, sewage gas) and Class C (landfill gas). Suitable for Type 2, Type 3, Type 4 (Versions A, B, D), and Type 6 (Versions C, E) engines.
  • MAN Truck & Bus M 3271-5[1]: Universally approved for natural gas and special gas applications, including catalytic converter systems.
  • TEDOM 61-0-0281.1: Approved for natural gas (G), propane-butane (P), landfill gas (L), biogas (B), and sewage gas (S).

[1] MAN approval number TUC 1849/21. Gas engine oils meeting specification M3271-5 can be used universally for operation with natural gas and special gas, including when using catalytic converters for exhaust aftertreatment. Switching to a product with the M3271-5 specification is recommended by MAN.
