Key considerations for shifting to a lower viscosity oil

Shifting to Lower Viscosity Oil Shifting to Lower Viscosity Oil

As any fleet operator knows, any improvement in fuel economy can have a significant impact on a business’ bottom-line.

Areas of focus in recent years have included driver behaviour, aerodynamics, trailer skirting, reduced engine idling, speed management, tyre pressure and low friction tyres. What is often overlooked, is the role lubricants can play in helping to reduce fuel consumption. If you run a mixed fleet and are looking to switch to more fuel efficient 5W-30 or 10W-30 oils what are the main factors to consider?

  • Consult with the experts. When considering any oil change you should always check with your OEM. They have extensive experience with their engines in numerous environments and with various engine oils. Similarly speak to your lubricant manufacturer, products such as those from Texaco have undergone millions of pounds worth of testing in diverse conditions and across multiple engine types.
  • Understand any potential issues: In some cases for example, a change in viscosity grade has been known to cause an issue with the oil pressure indicator.
  • Have a transition plan: Select trucks in your fleet that represent a variety of operating conditions and engines and run a test with lower viscosity oils to see where the greatest benefits lie.
  • Use real data: Base your decisions on hard numbers. You will not fully realise the benefits of fuel economy improvement if it comes at the expense of engine durability.
